Support payments to help struggling households cope with the cost of living will be available throughout 2025. The Government has confirmed the emergency payments will continue for the rest of this year.
People can apply for the cash from their local councils. Grants worth hundreds of pounds are available in many areas. Households can make applications if they are worried about their finances and struggling to pay for things like food, water and energy.
Local authorities will then decide if they qualify for payments. The support is part of the Government’s Household Support Fund (HSF). It has been confirmed the fund will be extended to run throughout 2025 and into 2026 to help those most in need.

It means councils will be accepting applications all this year. People will be unlikely to get more than one payment over a 12-month period however, to ensure as many households get help as possible.
Councils are paying out different amounts. birmingham-city-council>Birmingham City Council is making £200 payments. Full details of what is available in your area can be found on the Household Support Fund section of your council’s website.
The Government said: “You may be able to get help with essential costs from your local council. This is sometimes known as ‘the Household Support Fund’. This could help if you’re struggling to afford things like: energy and water bills, food, essential items.
“Your council may also offer food vouchers to families during the school holidays. Funding is aimed at anyone who’s vulnerable or cannot pay for essentials. You do not have to be getting benefits to get help from your local council.”
