‘Most welcoming’ city 90 minutes from Lancashire that’s home to Roman ruins and beautiful cathedral

A city rich in history and brimming with churches and cathedrals to discover just 90 minutes away from Lancashire has been named the most welcoming in the UK, according to a recent study.

The research conducted by Casino revealed that Carlisle is the country’s friendliest, with 6.3% of all reviews on TripAdvisor’s top pages mentioning the warm welcome received by visitors. The study involved an analysis of over 2.3 million reviews on Tripadvisor from 30 of the UK’s most frequented cities by tourists.

The focus was on identifying each city’s top hotels, attractions, and restaurants, specifically looking for reviews where visitors mentioned feeling welcomed. In addition to its renowned hospitality, Carlisle boasts a number of remarkable historical landmarks.

One of the most notable is Hadrian’s Wall, an ancient Roman fortification dating back to AD 122, stretching across the north west of England. Visitors often describe it as a “must visit” for history enthusiasts, praising the wall as a truly awe-inspiring sight, reports the Mirror.

“As a history buff, just visiting and seeing, and touching Hadrian’s wall is a long lasting wish,” wrote one visitor on Tripadvisor. “Blessed with great weather, it was truly a site to behold and imagine briefly the history and soldiers that built this great relic.

“Recommend visiting some of the dig sites along the wall as visiting the wall itself is only half the experience.”

Carlisle Cathedral is another unmissable experience for visitors

It started life as a Norman Priory Church in 1122, becoming a cathedral in 1133, but today is a gorgeous monument of history and architecture. Notable features include figurative stone carving, wonky Norman arches, a set of medieval choir stalls and the largest window in the ‘flowing decorated Gothic’ style in England.

Visitors to the cathedral commented on staff members’ friendliness. One person said on Tripadvisor: “Popped in on a rainy day and got the warmest and friendliest welcome from Julie at the door.

“We then had a lovely short guided tour from Maurice, very knowledgeable. What a treat to hear the organ.”

Another said: “Beautiful building. Very welcoming. Had a knowledgeable guide giving us information and answering questions. Interesting history and lots to see.”
