Why some drivers now need to pass two tests to keep their licence

Drivers aged over 70 now need to clear two key examinations to retain their driving licence. If you were born before 1954 be prepared to take vision tests and undergo cognitive assessments. Partner at the Hugh James serious injury team, Siobhan Thomas, issued a stark warning to motorists. “Depending on your responses to the self-assessment questionnaire you may be required to undergo medical assessment to assess your fitness to drive. These assessments are conducted by healthcare professionals, often your GP or a designated medical practitioner.”

Thomas elaborated on what the medical assessment might entail and said: “Medical assessments may include vision tests, cognitive assessments, and discussions about specific health conditions that could affect your ability to drive safely. While it may seem daunting these assessments are intended to support you in maintaining your independence while ensuring road safety.” For the latest Welsh news delivered to your inbox sign up to our newsletter.

It’s important to note that at the age of 70 a person’s driving licence automatically expires. To keep driving legally one must reapply for the licence, which then has to be renewed every three years. Should your licence expire and you continue to operate a vehicle it would constitute a criminal offence. The DVLA aids drivers with this transition by sending out reminders prior to their 70th birthday, and subsequently every three years, to prevent any inadvertent law-breaking, reports Chronicle Live.

The DVLA website clearly states: “It’s the law to renew your driving licence when you reach 70 years old. This is because all licences in the UK expire once you reach this age. So if it’s your 70th birthday soon read on to find out what happens to your existing licence and how to renew it.”
