New Year’s Day horror as man dies in Rochdale knife attack

A man has died following a horror stabbing in Rochdale in the early hours of New Year’s Day. Police were called to Sussex Street to reports of a disturbance at around 2.30am on January 1.

A 38-year-old man was tragically pronounced dead at the scene after suffering a ‘severe knife wound’ in the incident. His family have been informed by Greater Manchester Police.

The residential street was taped off with a forensic tent erected at the scene. Nearby Essex Street was also cordoned off, which was also linked to the knife attack.

Another man, aged 30, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital, Greater Manchester Police said. He remains there in a stable condition.

Police enquiries so far suggest the incident was ‘isolated’ and a ‘targeted attack’ involving two people. Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the fatal incident.

Pictures taken from the scene on Wednesday show multiple police cars in attendance along with Crime Scene Investigation vans. Paramedic equipment can also be seen on the ground.
