I visited Chinatown on a hunt for a private karaoke room, and struck gold on the busiest street of the area, Gerrard Street. Tucked away inside Dumplings’ Legend, a popular dim sum restaurant. I discovered an authentic karaoke experience.
Dumplings’ Legend is known for its variety of regional Chinese food, with more than 400 dishes. Most diners don’t realise that the restaurant hides four hidden karaoke rooms on its second floor, which you can book for three hours.
One standout feature of this spot is the late opening hours. It is fully licensed until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays, so you can spend the night singing your lungs out while having great food and drinks.

The room I booked was spacious enough for six people. It had a table with plates set, plenty of space to dance, and two microphones, ideal for letting loose with your favourite tunes.
Unlike karaoke bars where you wait ages for your turn, private rooms allow you to sing as many songs as you like, as loud as you want. The karaoke machine offers a wide range of song choices, spanning multiple languages.
I know some Japanese songs, and the machine even had those! There’s also an option to connect to YouTube for unlimited song choices, though it wasn’t working during my visit.
While singing, I also tasted their dumplings, which were also a highlight. The black truffle and turkey dumplings from their special Christmas menu were hands down my favourite.

Dumplings start at £6.50 for eight pieces, and they offer a set menu for £17.50 per person. Their Christmas five-course menu is £55, but it is great value for money; it includes prosecco, dumplings, a main course, turkey fried rice, vegetables, and a festive dessert.
For the main course, there’s all kinds of meats to choose from: duck, venison, beef, prawns, sea bass, turkey, pork, or lamb, all cooked in different ways. The beef fillet with Peking sauce stood out, with the spicy prawns coming a close second.
The turkey fried rice was another favourite of mine, so good it could easily be a meal on its own. The mulled wine roll dessert was colourful and festive, but not quite my style.

Still, the overall meal and karaoke combo made for an unforgettable night. Dumplings’ Legend strikes the perfect balance between authenticity and functionality; it’s not overly high-tech, but everything works seamlessly, adding to its charm.
I can’t wait to return for another round of singing and feasting. Whether or not it’s the best Chinese food in Chinatown, the unique experience makes it a must-try!
