One in three drivers will to give up petrol or diesel car next year

The allure of electric cars is gripping UK motorists, with a quarter reportedly considering an EV for their next purchase within the following year. Recent research highlighted that one in three UK drivers might opt for an electric vehicle (EV) as their next car, with 31% expressing openness to the idea.

The survey, involving 1,000 participants, indicated that almost one-third (30%) of drivers are thinking about going electric the next time they buy a car, and urban dwellers (31%) are slightly more inclined to do so compared to their rural counterparts (28%). The main driving force behind this shift appears to be sustainability; a whopping 74% of those interviewed want to reduce pollution and be more eco-friendly.

E. ON Drive Infrastructure UK’s Managing Director Dev Chana commented: “The potential for EVs in the UK is immense and our survey shows there is growing desire from drivers who recognise the environmental and financial benefits of switching to cleaner motoring.”

He also added, “The increased desire from drivers throws down a challenge to vehicle manufacturers, tech companies and local authorities to make sure the vehicles and the infrastructure they rely on are available and visible nationwide. We’re not just meeting today’s demands but building infrastructure to make sure electric mobility is convenient and accessible for everyone.”

The lower running costs of electric vehicles (EVs) are a significant factor in their growing popularity, with 58% of those surveyed noting the cost benefits of EV driving. Additionally, 18% acknowledged the superior performance of EVs compared to traditional petrol and diesel cars.

However, concerns remain, with 62% expressing worry about the scarcity of public charging points in their area, and 53% voicing apprehensions about battery life.
