The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has released new data indicating an additional 42,500 households are now benefiting from Pension Credit. This essential benefit boosts retirees’ income and offers further assistance, such as complimentary TV licences for those over 75, along with eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment, which could be up to £300.
However, time is of the essence to submit your claim; today marks the last chance to apply by phone, while online applications must be completed by tomorrow. Martin Lewis, the founder of MoneySavingExpert.com, has urgently called attention to this matter, highlighting that around 700,000 individuals might not be claiming what they’re due.
In a recent video on social media, Martin urged: “I’d urgently suggest any state pensioners on lower-income check now if you’re eligible for Pension Credit, which is a top-up to your income worth typically £4,000 a year. Do it now, you’ll also get the Winter Fuel Payment.”

Echoing this sentiment, Minister for Pensions Emma Reynolds MP stated: “We’re pleased to see more pensioners are now receiving Pension Credit and our staff are processing claims as quickly as possible. With the 21 December approaching, my message is clear: check if you are eligible for Pension Credit and if you are then apply, as it unlocks a range of benefits including the Winter Fuel Payment.”
The essential component of Pension Credit, known as “Guarantee Credit”, boosts your weekly income to £218.15 if you’re single, or £332.95 for couples. Normally, your income has to be lower than these amounts to qualify, but there are exceptions where you could still claim with a higher income, particularly if you have a disability, act as a carer or face steep housing costs, reports the Mirror.
What’s more, getting Pension Credit can open the door to a range of other benefits and freebies. Below is a snapshot of the possible support available once you start receiving Pension Credit:.
