The Birmingham road where almost 8,000 parking fines were handed out in a year

Over 7,700 parking fines have been issued this year on a notorious Birmingham road which is one of the worst in the country for parking penalties. Traffic wardens are regularly out on patrol here, and drivers considering taking the risk have been warned to think again – because they are likely to be caught.

Thousands of motorists fell foul of the rules on Alum Rock Road as they were punished for parking on double yellows, failing to pay or overstaying their time limit. A huge 7,732 fines were slapped onto windscreens along the busy road in 2024, up to November. That works out to around 25 every day on average.

It makes it Birmingham’s parking penalty hotspot. In fact, Alum Rock Road is one of the worst places in the whole country for parking fines.

Penalty charge notices (PCNs) have also surged on Stratford Road in Sparkhill, doubling from 2,463 last year to 5,053 in 2024. These were by far the most common Birmingham locations for drivers to be punished for breaking parking rules. Drivers are charged either £70 or £35 if paid within 14 days.

Elsewhere, Brummies were regularly caught out on Corporation Street in the city centre and Coventry Road, Small Heath. Details were revealed following a request for freedom of information from the Birmingham City Council.

Top 10 Birmingham streets for parking fines

  • Alum Rock Road – 7,732
  • Stratford Road, Sparkhill – 5,053
  • Corporation Street – 2,168
  • Coventry Road, Small Heath – 2,011
  • Washwood Heath Road – 1,946

The council did not disclose how much money it made from these streets but if all fines from Alum Rock Road alone were paid at the £35 rate, it would have brought in £270,000. Alum Rock Road is among the busiest in Birmingham and stretches along a lengthy section of the city, passing through Saltley into Alum Rock.

It’s lined with shops and other businesses and gets incredibly busy at peak times, resulting in a battle for parking spaces. But traffic wardens are out in force here and the figures send a warning to motorists they are unlikely to get away with breaking the rules. Earlier this year, we reported how wardens on Alum Rock Road were among the busiest in the entire country.

Only a road in Westminster, London, one of the busiest spots in the country near the Houses of Parliament, had more parking fines than Alum Rock Road, recent data showed.
