Lidl has celebrated a significant boost in sales over the festive period, with shoppers opting for the budget-friendly chain for their champagne and party food needs. The supermarket giant disclosed that its sales soared by 7 per cent year-on-year, with turnover exceeding £1 billion in the four weeks leading up to December 24, marking a “record” Christmas for the company.
This performance underscores Lidl’s robust growth trajectory, which saw an increase in its UK grocery market share in 2024 through attracting more customers and expanding its store network. According to Kantar’s industry analysts, Lidl was the fastest growing physical grocer in the last quarter, edging closer to overtaking Morrisons as the fifth largest supermarket group in the UK.
However, this year’s festive uplift did show a deceleration from the previous year’s 12 per cent rise during the same period, which also enjoyed the benefits of higher food and drink inflation rates. On Thursday, Lidl GB announced it had welcomed nearly two million more shoppers than ever before during the crucial holiday season, selling over 16 million pigs in blankets and eight million stuffing balls.
The retailer attributed its success partly to the strong performance of its Partytime range, which saw a 32 per cent jump in sales, while champagne sales bubbled up by 25 per cent. Ryan McDonnell, CEO of Lidl GB, expressed delight over the retail giant’s performance during the festive season: “For three decades, Lidl has been providing households with access to unbeatable quality and value at Christmas.”
He further shared the company’s enthusiasm saying, “This year, we were thrilled to welcome more customers than ever before.” Looking towards the future, McDonnell revealed plans for expansion: “Looking ahead, we’re excited to build on our momentum, growing our presence across the country and continuing to deliver the highest quality at the best prices on the market.”
