Upcoming Channel 4 drama Patience isset to hit our screens with a talented cast and story with a twist.

The new crime drama introduces us to Patience Evans (Ella Maisy Purvis), an autistic woman with a clerical job in police records. Her life takes a turn when Bea Metcalf (Laura Fraser) recognises her potential and recruits her for a new role to help investigate serious crimes.

Touted to provide a “unique and authentic perspective on neurodiversity”, the six-part Channel 4 drama has ensured that all neurodivergent characters are portrayed by neurodiverse actors.

The Mirror reports the plot synopsis has been released by Channel 4: “Patience Evans (Ella Maisy Purvis) works in the criminal records department of Yorkshire Police, cataloguing and filing the evidence produced during major cases.

“A young autistic woman, she craves routine and order, relishing the solitude and structure her job provides but she yearns for more. A brilliant, self-taught criminologist, Patience has an instinctive eye for crime scenes and a passion for problem-solving.

“Detective Bea Metcalf (Laura Fraser) is the first person to spot and utilize her talent, which opens a door into a whole new world for Patience.

“Patience attends a regular support group for autistic adults where they discuss the barriers in operating in a neuro-typical world and how best to navigate it.”

Patience is a reimagining of the popular French series Astrid and Raphaelle, co-produced by JLA Productions. The series will be distributed globally by Beta Film and is being produced in collaboration with Happy Duck Films.

The inaugural episode is scheduled for broadcast at 9pm on Wednesday, January 8 on Channel 4.

The episode will introduce viewers to Patience’s involvement with the team through her hyperlexia and demonstrate how her exceptional visual and auditory memory aids her in identifying patterns.

How many episodes does Patience have and what is the TV release schedule?

The new series Patience comprises of six episodes, with each episode roughly an hour in duration.

The second episode will air the following evening (Thursday, January 9) at 9pm, with subsequent episodes airing weekly on Wednesdays.

All episodes will be accessible on demand via Channel 4.

Laura Fraser portrays Detective Bea Metcalf, who enlists Patience’s help in investigating crimes. Fraser is best known for her role as Lydia Rodarte-Quayle in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, but audiences may also recognise her from Lip Service, Crime, Traces, The Loch and Black Box.

Tom Lewis, known for his role as Thomas Sowden in Gentleman Jack and appearances in A Discovery of Witches and the music video for Lewis Capaldi’s Wish You The Best, takes on the role of Elliot Scott in the new crime drama.

Ava-Grace Cook portrays a Young Patience, while Maxwell Whitelock from Boat Story features as Alfie Metcalf-Haynes. Doctor Who’s Ali Ariaie takes on the role of Will Akbari, and Nathan Welsh from Trying also joins the wider cast.
