Cold health alert issued for London as snow and ice forecast

The warning has been raised by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) in the face of weather forecasts of snow and ice over the next few days by the Met Office.

From 12pm today (January 2) until 12pm on January 8, an enhanced cold weather response will be in place across London, the South East, South West, North East, North West, Yorkshire and The Humber, East Midlands, West Midlands and the East of England.

In London heavy now is expected to fall on January 4 and 5 with a risk score of 12, bringing with it medium impact and the potential for weekend disruption to travel.

The forecasted weather is likely to cause “significant impacts across health and social care services”, according to the UKHSA.

A rise in deaths is possible for those aged around 65 or in younger age groups, health care facilities may experience staffing issues due to travel delays, and the demand for health services is likely to increase.

Details on how to keep yourself safe have been published on the UKHSA website.
