Brit shoppers divided after Waitrose unveils huge Easter treat months early

Brits have been left divided after a supermarket unveiled an Easter treat months earlier than expected.

Waitrose shelves are now stocked with 1kg bags of Mini Eggs, despite Easter Sunday not being until April 20, 2025. Taking to Instagram, Waitrose Woodley in Berkshire had staff channel this year’s Gavin and Stacey Christmas special to announce the news.

Miming one of the hit show’s most important scenes, an employee holding a bag of Mini Eggs said: “You ain’t gonna find better than me, Neil,” a nod to the moment Smithy (played by James Corden) threatened to leave his fiancée of five years, Sonia, at the altar. Another staff member retorts: “I already did,” as they showed off the supersized chocolate offering

But not everyone is basking in the early Easter enthusiasm. Some disenchanted customers took to the comments section to vent, with one advising the retailer to “calm the f**k down” since Jesus “was only just born.” There was visible exasperation at the sweets being sold “before New Year.”

One aggravated social media user petitioned for a brief respite, asking: “Can you please just give us a small break?” However, not everyone was caught off guard by the chocolates’ appearance. An Instagram user mentioned that the treats were “out of stock everywhere,” eager to snag the kilogram of chocolate before others did.

Waitrose Woodley, however, assured shoppers that they already had them in stock. A desperate shopper pleaded: “Please tell me where in Cheshire can I buy them?? My nearest stores are Northwich and Sandbach. ” One individual wasn’t too fussed about the chocolate, instead asking, “Can we get 1kg steaks, please?” as an alternative.

Another pointed out, “4 months [away]…and yet, as someone who doesn’t even like Valentine’s, you’ve skipped it,” noting that Easter doesn’t arrive until April 20 next year. Someone else joked: “He [Jesus] was only just born [Christmas day]. Calm the f**k down before we bring out the Jesus death eggs.”

For many Christians, the eating of Easter eggs marks the end of the lent period, which is where “40 days are observed to represent the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert where he fasted and was tempted by the devil,” according to The Town Talk.

As a result of this, many Christians will opt to give something up over the lent period, for example, chocolate – and then when Easter comes around, they can allow themselves to indulge in the sweet treat.

In the video comments, someone even said that Waitrose’s social media was currently “on fire” thanks to the people behind it, and another added that the short clip was “pure cinema”.
