‘I lost 65lb in a year – everything changed when I stopped making key mistake’

If you’re thinking of losing weight as part of your New Year’s resolutions, this advice could help.

Many of us welcome a fresh start with the new year and have pledged to achieve at least one personal goal in the coming 12 months. The most popular resolutions often focus on health improvements such as quitting smoking, boosting mental health, and the perennial favourite – losing weight.

However, New Year’s resolutions are infamous for their short lifespan, with some people abandoning their commitments just days into January. But, according to a fitness expert, if slimming down is part of your resolutions, then this key advice might just be the key to your success.

Cassie turned to TikTok to share her own journey, illustrating that prior to losing an impressive 65lbs in 2020, she felt like she had “wasted” years in ineffective weight loss attempts.

Following the birth of her child, she went on to lose another 75lbs, achieving this postpartum milestone in under a year. For those looking to emulate her success, Cassie emphasises shared a key rule. Avoid fad diets that require you to cut out entire food groups – as they’re just not sustainable!

Instead, she recommends using a calorie calculator to input your current weight and weight loss ambitions. This will then tell you what your calorie deficit is. With the help of a tracking app, you can log the foods you eat in a day to help you hit that number. She explained: “You don’t have to cut out foods, you don’t have to avoid foods, you don’t have to eat before or after certain times. You eat whatever you want, you just stay in a calorie deficit.”

Cassie’s next tip was to “find a way that you enjoy moving your body”. She shared that she gets her exercise by walking either outside or on a treadmill for 30-45 minutes a day, but stressed the importance of finding an activity you love, be it walking, cycling, or dancing. The expert also suggested setting non-weight-related fitness goals, such as running a mile, lifting a certain weight, or building confidence. This approach helps maintain motivation even when progress on the scales slows down.

She added: “You’re going to aim for consistency, not perfection. There will be days when you eat over your calorie deficit and you don’t exercise, and that’s fine. You’re not looking for perfection here. This is not all or nothing. This is a lifestyle change and this is consistency. Aim to be consistent 85 to 90% of the time.”

Cassie also mentioned that on those more challenging days, it’s crucial to remember that it’s not a failure. You haven’t undone all your progress and there is no need to start from scratch, instead you just pick up where you left off the next day and continue pushing forward.

Her video garnered heaps of praise from viewers, who thanked her for the encouragement. Many stated she had ignited their determination to kickstart their weight loss goals for 2025. One user commented: “Thank you, I needed this. I’m so afraid of failing that I struggle to start. Taking away the idea of perfection helps! ” While another expressed: “You have inspired me, you came up at the right time.”
