River Mersey embankment swept away before hundreds rescued in severe Didsbury floods

The embankment beside the River Mersey was swept away before heavy rainfall caused severe flooding in Didsbury on New Year’s Day.

Over 400 people had to be evacuated and transported to safety on boats after Palatine Road became completely submerged, causing power cuts, with water climbing up from the ground floor of nearby flats and a hotel.

Videos and pictures taken from the south Manchester suburb on Wednesday night showed a huge emergency response, including fire crews, water rescue units, incident response teams, police and paramedics and mountain rescue teams all in attendance amid the major rescue mission.
