Drivers are using ‘magic’ button to defrost windscreen in seconds

As the UK braces for a cold snap, with snow and frost already predicted by the Met Office across London and the rest of the country, commuters are now having to deal with frozen windshields. However, a driving expert has shared a simple trick that can be done from inside your vehicle using just one button.

The advice was shared on TikTok by Driving Test Success under the handle @drivingtestsuccess. They revealed that a quick solution to icy windscreens is just a button-press away – simply turn up the heat and set your front windscreen fan to full blast. The warmth will radiate through the glass and remove the frost, they explained in their video. To clear excess water, just wipe it away and reduce the fan speed.

While this might seem like common sense to some drivers, the tip was a revelation to many social media users, who expressed their surprise and gratitude. In the video, they explained: “Frozen wind screen? Put the temperature on high. Put the front windscreen fan on max. The ice will start to melt from the heat. Wipe away excess water and return the fan to normal.”

One user commented: “Wow, magic! The ice is gone.” Another thankful viewer added: “I’ve learned so much thanks to your app.” Some TikTok users were not convinced by the de-icing advice, with one person commenting: “Wastes more fuel. Just get [out] and scrape it off you lazy so and so.”

Yet, Driving Test Success isn’t the only one promoting this method; Clear View Driving also recommends using demisters before driving away. They advise: “Now don’t use your windscreen wipers or washers as that won’t help. Turn on your front and rear demister.”

They add, “The rear demister also heats up your side mirrors in most new cars. But if the mirrors are not clear, make sure to clear them before you start driving. Then, once it’s done you can use your wipers.”

Moreover, the AA has offered additional tips for motorists, suggesting they “turn on the warm air blower” and “heated mirrors” to efficiently and safely remove frost. The AA explains: “Start the engine and turn on the warm air blower on the windscreen. Switch on the rear windscreen heater and heated mirrors, if you have them. Turn on the air-con. It’s not just for summer – it’ll remove moisture from the air to stop the car from misting up.”

They also warn against using hands to wipe misted windows, which could leave “Don’t use your hands to wipe misted-up windows – you’ll leave greasy smears and a diamond ring could scratch the glass. Use a lint-free absorbent cloth if necessary.”
