UK households up and down the country are being urged to do one simple thing this weekend as Brits prepare for snow and ice chaos over the next couple of days, and weather warnings kick in for many.
From noon on Saturday, most of England is under a yellow warning for snow and ice warning until Sunday at midnight.
Yellow warnings for snow and ice are in place in western Scotland, northwest England, and parts of Wales and Northern Ireland today.
The Met Office has advised that Brits should open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing to prevent frozen pipes.
Frozen pipes can be costly to repair and can wreak havoc on your home. Not only can they stop heating and hot water from working properly, but they can also burst, causing leaks or even flooding.
Therefore, avoid exposing the pipes to freezing temperatures by keeping kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors open to allow warmer air to circulate.
The forecaster also advises that if you are cut off from the snow, you should stay indoors and wrap up with layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing rather than bulky clothing.
Brits should also keep the thermostat set to the same temperature during the day and at night.
There is a likelihood of travel disruption and power cuts in the most affected areas of the Midlands, Wales and northern England, which could see between 5cm and 30cm of snowfall.
Those thinking of driving this weekend should carefully plan their route, check for delays and road closures and remember to pack essentials.
This comes after the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued cold weather health alerts for all of England ahead of a week of icy temperatures.
Amber alerts were issued from 12pm on Thursday until next Wednesday, meaning a rise in deaths is likely, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions.
