Busy Preston road closed for hours after car crashes into telegraph pole in icy conditions

A busy road in Preston was closed for hours overnight after a car crashed into a telegraph pole amid the icy conditions.

Emergency services were called to D’Urton Lane in the Fulwood area of the city shortly before midnight on Thursday (January 2). When police arrived at the scene they found a Volkswagen Scirocco had collided with the telegraph pole.

The road was closed in both directions from the junction with Fernyhalgh Lane to Haighton Green Lane. The car was damaged in the incident but police said ‘fortunately’ there were no injuries.

A force spokesperson told LancsLive that they are unable definitively say if ice was the cause or a contributing factor to the incident, however the road was ‘certainly extremely icy’.

In a statement on social media at 12.47am this morning (January 3), Preston Police said: “We’re currently at the scene of a road closure on D’urton Lane in Preston from the junction with Fernyhalgh Lane to Haighton Green Lane. The road is closed due to a road traffic collision and we anticipate this will be closed for some time.

“lease be aware of the icy conditions on this road and because of this we’re advising you to be mindful of these conditions and drive accordingly. We’ll provide an update once cleared and thank you in advance for your patience.”

In an update at 8.31am, the force added: “*ROAD REOPENED* You may recall through the night we had to put a road closure on D’urton Lane in Preston from the junction with Fernyhalgh Lane to Haighton Green Lane. This has now been reopened, however, we still would advise you to be mindful of the conditions and drive accordingly as we are still experiencing icy conditions. Thank you.”
