Police issue update after man found collapsed in street

Seven people were previously arrested

Police have issued an update after a man was found collapsed in the city centre. Merseyside Police received a call from paramedics at North West Ambulance Service at around 12.45am on Thursday, January 2.

It followed a report a man had been found on Hanover Street, close to the junction of Church Street with a suspected head injury. He was taken to hospital for treatment for his injury. A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said today the victim was due to be discharged from hospital imminently.

When the ECHO arrived at the scene on Thursday, a cordon was in place at the junction of Wood Street and Hanover Street from Irish bar O’Neill’s to nightclub Popworld. A smaller cordon was also in place next to kebab shop The F*word, on the corner of Bold Street and Hanover Street. Police confirmed seven people were arrested. They included:

  • A 38 year-old man from Bootle, was arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding with intent
  • A 17 year-old male from Manchester was arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding with intent and affray
  • A 16 year-old male from Sheffield was arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding with intent and affray
  • A 15 year-old male from Manchester was arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding with intent and possession of a Class B drug (cannabis).
  • A 17 year-old male from Salford was arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding with intent
  • An 18-year-old man from Salford was arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding with intent
  • A 17 year-old male from Manchester was arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding with intent

In an update issued today, a spokesperson for the force said the 38-year-old man had been released under investigation and the remaining six have been bailed pending further enquiries.
