Drivers are still facing disruption on Greater Manchester’s roads two days on from the devastating New Year’s floods. Downpours led to chaos across the region, as residents began 2025 with severe flooding on Wednesday (January 1).
A major incident was declared as emergency services dealt with several severe flooding incidents. Around 400 people were evacuated from Meadow Mill, in Stockport, while 445 people were rescued from Palatine Road, in Didsbury.
People were evacuated from the Britannia Country House Hotel and neighbouring homes in the area. Other areas also saw severe flooding including Cheadle, Urmston and Platt Bridge – with almost every corner of Greater Manchester affected.
One major road remains closed in both directions following the floods. The A555 Manchester Airport relief road has been shut since Wednesday, with vehicles stranded in the road.
It remains closed today (Friday) between Ringway Road, near Handforth, and Roy Chadwick Way, in Woodford. In an update posted on X this morning, Cheadle Hulme councillor Peter Crossen said: “A555 remains closed, water is now clear and council officers are working with GMP to clear the two remaining cars, we are not yet in a position to confirm a timescale for reopening.”

Meanwhile, the B5213 Church Road, in Trafford, also remains closed from Flixton Road, in Flixton, to Station Road, in Urmston. Images shared yesterday (above) showed deep water on the road, as drivers were urged to avoid the area.
Transport for Greater Manchester says many smaller roads are also still affected by flooding today, and drivers are urged to take care. Stockport and Trafford councils have been approached for further details.
