Gillian Shaw is charged with murdering Steven Cox, who died aged 63 in the early hours of New Year’s Day after suffering serious injuries

A woman is set to face a trial charged with murder after a man died following an assault on New Year’s Eve. Police were called to a domestic incident on Rothwell Street in Everton shortly after 4pm on Tuesday, December 31.
Steven Cox was found with “a number of serious injuries” at the scene. The 63-year-old subsequently died in hospital in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
Gillian Shaw, who the ECHO understands is Mr Cox’s long term partner, has since been charged with his murder. The 61-year-old, of Rothwell Street, appeared before Liverpool Crown Court this morning, Thursday, in order to face this count.
Appearing via video link to HMP Styal wearing a grey prison issue jumper and glasses, she spoke only to confirm her name and date of birth during the hearing and was not asked to enter any plea but wiped tears away with a tissue at times. A seven-day trial was however scheduled for June 23, with Shaw being further remanded into custody by the Honorary Recorder of Liverpool Judge Andrew Menary KC ahead of a plea hearing on March 28.
A Merseyside Police spokesman said yesterday: “A woman has been charged with murder following an incident at a house in Everton on Tuesday, December 31. Officers were called to an address on Rothwell Street just after 4pm following a report of a domestic-related assault.

“When they arrived, officers found a 63-year-old man who had suffered a number of serious injuries. The man was taken to hospital, where he sadly died in the early hours of Wednesday, January 1.
“Gillian Shaw, 61 years, of Rothwell Street, Everton, was arrested at the scene and later charged with murder. She was remanded into custody to appear at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court today, Thursday, January 2.
