Yorkshire households issued Met Office power cut warning as blizzards set to arrive

Yorkshire households are being told to prepare for power cuts on Saturday evening. The Met Office has issued yellow and amber snow warnings as we navigate through the first week of January, heading towards the weekend of January 4 and 5.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has maintained its cold weather health alerts for all of England in anticipation of a week of low temperatures. Amber alerts were issued on Thursday and will remain in effect until January 8, indicating a likely increase in deaths, according to the agency.

After another chilly night on Friday, with ice prevalent in many places, an area of low pressure is set to move into the UK from the southwest on Saturday. This will initially bring rain to South West England before it increasingly turns to snow as it encounters the cold air over the UK late in the afternoon and into the evening on Sunday.

Snow will accumulate throughout the evening and into Sunday before transitioning to rain in central and southern parts of England. However, it will continue to fall as snow in northern England, where significant accumulations could develop throughout Sunday.

As the snow transitions to rain further south, particularly over Wales, there is a risk of freezing rain – a hazardous weather phenomenon that causes rain to freeze instantly upon hitting the surface, leading to perilous icy conditions, reports Birmingham Live.
