While some people can stare at a brainteaser for hours and still not come up with an answer, others are able to solve them in less than 30 seconds. If you believe you’re in the second category, why not give this 1% Club brainteaser a go to test your logic skills.
The question, which only 1% of the population can answer, asks: “In a room of 100 people, 99% are left-handed. How many left-handed people have to leave the room to bring that percentage down to 98%?” After taking the 30 seconds to try to figure it out, some viewers admitted they didn’t get anywhere with their calculations, with some even taking to Reddit in search for the solution.
One user asked: “I found this on Instagram can someone help me with this?” In response, another user said: “The thing about this is it is showing the insane gap between 98% and 99%. 99% means the opposite is 1 in 100, but 98%’s opposite is 1 in 50, therefore we need to keep 49 of the left handed people, therefore we need 50 of them to leave.”
One more user confirmed: “If 99% of 100 people are left-handed that means only one person in the room is right-handed. If 50 left-handed people left the room you would have 49 left handed people and 1 right handed person. 49/50 = 98/100.”

Putting it another way, another user said: “You setup a simple single variable equation x*0.02=1 and solve for x. x = 1/0.02 = 50. 50 is the total number of people, so 50 lefties need to leave.” A final user said: “I changed the question from how many lefties need to leave to bring the percentage down to 98% to how many need to leave to bring the percentage of righties up to 2%, knowing there is only 1 righty.
“For 1 individual to be 2% of a group, the easy answer is 50 total. So, 50 lefties have to leave.” Presented by Lee Mack, the game show The 1% Club asks players to solve questions using logic and common sense.
At the start of each episode, 100 contestants go head-to-head with questions until those remaining reach the final question – which only 1% of the population will be able to solve. Speaking about the show on IMDb, one viewer said: “Absolutely love this programme. Great format, well presented and produced. Very inclusive, as everyone can give it a go! Fantastic entertainment! Loads of fun to play as a family at home. What about an ‘app’ version?!”
Another added: “Lee Mack is brilliant as the host of this quiz show. His quick wit with the contestants is as entertaining as the programme itself. It would be good fun for the whole family to watch together and compete with each other. I used to do this with my wife but she is as thick as mince and rarely gets past question two!”
