Professor Tim Spector warns ‘cholesterol-busting superfood is not as healthy as believed’

Health guru Professor Tim Spector has sounded the alarm on the supposed health benefits of a well-known superfood. The comments were made in the Netflix show ‘Hack Your Health: The Secret of Your Gut’, where Spector and others highlight the critical role of our gut health for overall wellbeing.

During a conversation on the topic, he questioned the benefit of kale, saying: “Many people think, like you, that just having a really healthy kale salad every day is going to keep them healthy. That’s not as healthy as we thought.”

Adding weight to his skepticism, Jack Gilbert, a professor at the University of California, supported Tim’s assertion, adding: “The more diversity you consume, the more rich your microbiome will be, the more species of bacteria that will be present inside your gut.”

Professor Spector elaborated on the dietary approach we should adopt: “And that does allow you to deal with allergies and intolerances better. It’s not about restricting things. It’s about enlarging your world of foods that are possible for you to eat.”

However, amid these cautionary stances, Dr Federica Amati, a nutritionist, took to Instagram to endorse kale, proclaiming her fondness for it in various dishes. She enthused: “I do love kale in lots of different recipes. Kale salads are really good; adding kale to a pesto is something I love to do as well and another really good combination is kale and anchovies.”

Dr Amati highlighted the nutritional value of kale, mentioning its polyphenol content: “Kale is a brassica containing lots of polyphenols. It’s high in fibre and it is highly versatile. However, it’s not the only leafy green that offers us such a variety of benefits and some people really don’t like the taste.”

Eminent health specialists have long touted the advantages of a diet rich in Polyphenols for their role in reducing cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and even heart disease risk. ‘Hack Your Health: The Secret of Your Gut’, a program focusing on these benefits, is now streaming on Netflix.
