Turkey may be more traditional, but ducks are all the rage in Ashton Keynes on Boxing Day. The picturesque Wiltshire village celebrated a Christmas tradition in grand style with its highly anticipated, ‘World Famous’ Duck Race.
Hundreds of local residents stretched their legs and gathered along the banks of the Thames to participate in the annual event, organised by Ashton Keynes Football Club, generously sponsored by Bewley Homes, to raise funds for the village’s youth football programs.
With a lively atmosphere enhanced by festive cheer, the Duck Race once again cemented its reputation as a hallmark of Ashton Keynes’ community calendar. Five hundred plastic ducks were launched into the river, and headed half a mile downstream, followed by villagers hoping to have the fastest bird.
In addition to the main race, the day featured a range of family-friendly activities and entertainment, creating a perfect post-Christmas outing for all ages. With hot chocolate being served and opportunities to win prizes, it made for a memorable experience for everyone in attendance.
David Affleck, spokesperson for the football club, commented: “The duck race has very much become part of tradition in Ashton Keynes but attracts people from outside the area as well. It’s tremendous fun for all ages and we make sure every single duck reaches the finish line. Our young footballers and the toddler group will benefit from everyone’s tremendous generosity.”
