Bideford mums save New Year’s Eve with unforgettable children’s event

When Lucy Lowe realised just weeks before New Year’s Eve that there was no local event planned for Bideford’s children, she turned to social media to rally the community—and the response was extraordinary.

“What an amazing display of community spirit,” Lucy said. “Two weeks before New Year’s Eve it was apparent there was nothing on for the local children in Bideford. I decided to put a shout out on social media and see if our local community would come together to put on an event for local families. Which they did.”

Thanks to an outpouring of support, the Bideford Pannier Market transformed into a hub of family-friendly fun on New Year’s Eve. The event, which ran from 3pm to 4:30pm, featured a stunt show, disco, crafts, and special guest appearances, delighting kids and parents alike.

The town council provided the hall, and local businesses and volunteers stepped up to make the event a success.

“A huge thank you to everyone who was involved—helpers, service providers, snack donors, craft organisers, and volunteers,” Lucy said. Among those credited were Wayne Isaac of Bouncy and Beyond, who brought a bouncy castle, and Mickey Parker of Club Karaoke, who provided disco equipment.

Live entertainment included a performance by local duo Dogleg, while Jack and Bodie Johns wowed the crowd with an impressive stunt show. Magical Guests provided a character meet-and-greet, and crafts ranged from slime-making to biscuit decorating, organised by a dedicated team of volunteers.

Parents and attendees praised the event as a highlight of the holiday season. Linda Hellyer commented: “Well done on organising the children’s party. That was the best yet, and there was so much for the children to do.”

Karen Austin shared her enthusiasm, saying: “Looks like it was great. Well done for organising such a lovely event for the community—just what Bideford needs.”

Penny Hall added: “A lovely way of using the market. Well done to all the people who organised it.”

Lucy thanked all those in the community who helped including Minxy’s Sweets who donated sweet cones, Pizza Time Bideford provided snacks, and South West Event Management Solutions CIC offered insurance. The community spirit extended to volunteers like Jolene, Karen, Martyn, Linda, Summer, Tracy, Josh, and Candy, who ran activities and craft tables.

“This event was completely free and shows what we can achieve when we come together,” Lucy said. “A massive thank you to everyone that attended—we had a fantastic time.”
