Overcrowding is set to be eased on two of Bury’s busiest bus routes with the introduction of 19 new electric double-deckers this weekend. Go North West, in partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), will introduce the new fleet to the Bee Network on Sunday, January 5.
The new buses will operate on routes 472 and 474, serving Bury and Ramsbottom. The 472 circular covers Bury, Walmersley, Ramsbottom and Holcombe Brook while the 474 operates the opposite way.
Transport chiefs said that by replacing smaller vehicles, they will reduce potential overcrowding and contribute to the region’s clean air targets. Manufactured in the UK by WrightBus, Bury Council said the zero-emission buses are equipped with’ state-of-the-art features designed to enhance passenger comfort and safety’.
These include audio-visual next stop announcements, two wheelchair bays, anti-slip flooring, a passenger hearing loop system, and USB chargers at every seat. Coun Eamonn O’Brien, leader of Bury Council, said: “The Ramsbottom circular is one of the best-used bus routes in our borough, and this is great news for passengers.
“Modern electric vehicles, with better facilities and good for the environment – it really is a win-win situation.” Nigel Featham, Managing Director of Go North West, said: “We are delighted to expand our electric bus fleet, promoting cleaner air in Greater Manchester, reduced carbon emissions and more comfortable journeys for passengers.
“This investment underlines our commitment to working with TfGM and local communities to ensure Greater Manchester has one of the very best bus networks in the UK.” The expansion increases Go North West’s electric fleet to 69 buses.
