Some UK households are in line for a financial boost this month as they could receive up to £500 in cost of living payments, aimed at covering expenses for food and energy amongst other necessities. The Household Support Fund has secured an extension until 2025.
This enables the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to distribute funds to local councils, who then allocate the aid according to local needs. However, it’s important to note that eligibility criteria and payment amounts will vary from council to council.
For instance, Solihull Council offers energy bill vouchers worth £147 or direct debt relief up to £500 for those battling utility bill debts. In contrast, Camden Council in London is providing eligible families with payments up to £500 per household and additional supermarket shopping vouchers of up to £30 per child.
As reported by Express.co.uk, Leeds Council offers differing payments, including £40 handouts, or £150 for pensioners not receiving Winter Fuel Payments. Meanwhile, Calderdale Council is earmarking £100 payouts for households with children or disabled members. While certain councils target beneficiaries on benefits, the scheme does not exclusively serve this group.
The Government’s guidelines state: “Funding is aimed at anyone who’s vulnerable or cannot pay for essentials. You do not have to be getting benefits to get help from your local council.”
Moreover, accessing support from the Household Support Fund won’t affect any existing benefit entitlements. “If you get benefits, they will not be affected if you get a payment from a Household Support Fund scheme,” the Government website says.
“Councils decide how to run their schemes. There may be differences in eligibility criteria, if or how you need to apply, and who money is given to.
“For example, some councils share out money through local charities and community groups and some limit household applications to one per year.”
