Mayor predicts a ‘big year’ ahead for the West Midlands where residents ‘see and feel a difference’

The Mayor of the West Midlands has predicted a ‘big year’ ahead as it looks forward to a busy 2025. Richard Parker said he wants to build on his main priorities around improving housing, transport, jobs and growth in the coming 12 months.

Mr Parker was elected into the role back in May having secured 225,590 votes just ahead of former Mayor Andy Street who polled 224,082 – giving him a margin of victory of just 1508. He described his first seven months as a “whirlwind” and reflected on his achievements and biggest challenges faced so far.

The Mayor said: “It’s going to be a big year for us. We’re going to make real progress on the things that matter most to people – improving transport, creating jobs, kick-starting growth, building homes and ensuring our young people have the opportunities they deserve. I want residents to see and feel the difference I’m making, whether it’s through better journeys, safer streets or more opportunities.

“I’m focussed on ensuring that the West Midlands is a place where everyone can thrive, and I’m determined to build on the strong progress we’ve made so far. It’s been a whirlwind seven months, and I feel so honoured to serve this region. It’s a privilege to be in this position, and I want to use it to make a real difference to the West Midlands.

“I’ve taken this time to get a grip on the issues and we’ve delivered some big wins already. Since May, we’ve taken a major step forward on bus franchising; secured a £5.5bn investment zone; agreed to invest in our first social housing project; engaged nearly 5,800 times with businesses across the region; issued nearly £10 million of grants to businesses to help them grow or improve efficiencies; and set up initiatives like the Youth Plan to get a grip on youth unemployment.

“But what stands out to me most is the energy and passion I’ve seen from people across the region. Our residents and businesses are so proud to be part of the West Midlands and I am so proud to lead it. I’ve had support from so many different people, all eager for change and to help make this a region with jobs, journeys, homes and growth for everyone.”

He added: “For me, the biggest challenge has been making tough decisions about where to focus our resources, and what to prioritise – especially at a time when budgets are tight and the needs of our communities are so significant.

“But it’s in those moments of challenge that you really drive forward. I’ve learned that by bringing people together and keeping the conversation going, we can navigate even the toughest situations. It hasn’t always been easy, but I’m proud of the way the whole team has risen to the challenges.”
