‘I lost 15lbs after changing everyday habit – I should have done it sooner’

As we step into 2025, many people across Britain are setting their sights on achieving their New Year’s resolutions. One of the most popular ambitions is weight loss, with individuals exploring a variety of tactics to slim down by a dress size or more.

Yet, for some, drastic alterations to their daily habits can prove counterproductive, leading to abandonment of their goals when the going gets tough. Seeking advice that wouldn’t upend her life, a woman took to Reddit to ask: “What are small lifestyle changes that have led to weight loss for you.”

She elaborated: “Okay, I’m going to do it again. I’m going to try to lose weight. I want to be a mum and I want to be healthy for my husband and family. I also want to feel beautiful. What small, sustainable changes have you made that have led to weight loss? ” The overwhelming consensus among the responses was to incorporate walking into her daily routine, which many claimed had significantly improved their lives.

A particular testimonial stood out, where a user recounted: “I got a dog last summer, a small one. So our walks are not too long; two to three shorter ones, about 15-25 minutes and one bigger walk, about 0,75-1,5h. I lost about 15.5lbs. Just by walking 2hrs a day. No change in diet or something else. So even if you don’t walk as much, but also change your diet, it’ll have an effect.”

Another user shared their top tips for incorporating more walking into a busy lifestyle, suggesting: “If there isn’t too much nature to walk in where you live, or if you don’t have too much time to spare for just walking, try things like: parking the furthest away from the store on the parking lot (as long as that is safe), walk up and down your flat/office, if possible, when taking a call, get off the Uber a few blocks early and walk the rest, do everything that’s in a walking distance of 15 min one way per foot, and so on.”

Another user chimed in with personal insights saying: “I always notice the biggest changes when I keep up with walking. It’s why I lost weight when I first moved to a very walkable area and gained weight when I moved to a suburb where you drive more.”

On the topic of diet changes accompanying their walking routine, a contributor said: “After their daily walk became a habit, another user spoke about how they lowered their sugar and carbs intake and increased their protein. They said: ‘I used to eat a ton of bread and other carbs. I didn’t cut them out completely but I did decrease significantly and replaced it with more protein.”

Adding to the conversation, someone else agreed: “Eating slow and actually stopping when you are full. Two meals a day. No snacking or very minimal snacking. Walking 20-30 miles a week.”
