James Corden reveals Gavin and Stacey real-life love story inspiration

In a recent documentary, James Corden shared the real-life inspiration behind the hit BBC sitcom Gavin and Stacey, which left fans feeling nostalgic and sentimental since the final episode aired on Christmas Day.

The documentary, A Fond Farewell, which aired on New Year’s Day, delved into the creation of the highly anticipated finale and reminisced about the show’s 17-year history, giving fans an intimate look behind the scenes of the much-loved series. James, who plays the well-loved and amusing Smithy in the show, shared a personal account of his friend Gavin, whose love story closely mirrors that of Gavin Shipman, the character portrayed by Mathew Horne in the series.

Sharing the tale of the couple who inspired the show, James (46), told Ruth about the couple: “My mate Gavin met his girlfriend because he worked in sales and she worked in accounts but they used to speak on the phone,” according to an article in Wales Online. “He was like, ‘I’m just chatting to this girl at work and we just ended up on the phone for hours’ and then he said to me, ‘I’m gonna meet her this weekend’ and I was like, ‘What? ! They ended up having a frivolous weekend and coming back and [he was] going ‘I’m in love with her!'” The couple went on to exchange their vows.

James shared the touching tale with Ruth in an interview. In a nod to its origins, the concluding episode of Gavin and Stacey saw the tumultuous couple Smithy and Nessa finally admit their feelings and tie the knot, albeit with a few quintessential plot twists.

Smithy was initially poised to wed his girlfriend Sonia, following the disclosure that he had never replied to Nessa’s proposal – a suspenseful moment from the 2019 Christmas Special of the series, reports the Mirror.

The final instalment of Gavin and Stacey drew in a remarkable 12.5 million viewers, securing its position as the most-watched programme on Christmas Day.
