A financial boost could be coming to some UK households this month, with eligible residents potentially receiving up to £500 in Cost of Living payments. These payments are intended to help cover essential costs such as food and energy.
The Household Support Fund, which has been extended until 2025, enables the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to transfer funds to local authorities which then distribute the support based on local needs – including two Yorkshire councils. However, eligibility criteria and payment amounts will vary among them.
For example, Leeds Council provides varying amounts including £40 grants or £150 for pensioners exempt from Winter Fuel Payments. Calderdale Council, meanwhile, plans £100 for homes with children or disabled individuals.
Solihull Council offers energy bill vouchers worth £147 or direct debt relief up to £500, while Camden Council in London is distributing up to £500 per family plus supermarket vouchers of up to £30 for each child.
The aim is to aid the vulnerable or those struggling to afford necessities, but it’s important to note that receipt of benefits is not a requirement for support.
As reported by Express.co.uk, the Government’s guidelines state: “Funding is aimed at anyone who’s vulnerable or cannot pay for essentials. You do not have to be getting benefits to get help from your local council.”
The Government has assured that utilising the Household Support Fund will not affect existing benefit claims. The official website clarifies: “If you get benefits, they will not be affected if you get a payment from a Household Support Fund scheme.
“Councils decide how to run their schemes. There may be differences in eligibility criteria, if or how you need to apply, and who money is given to.”
It also highlights that methods of disbursement vary, with some councils partnering with local charities and community groups, while others may restrict applications to one per household annually.
With the March 31 deadline looming, those in need are urged to check gov.uk/cost-living-help-local-council to determine eligibility for the financial support offered.
