Exmouth pub becomes the second in the town this week to close ‘with immediate effect’

A much-loved Exmouth pub has closed its doors “with immediate effect” – becoming the second establishment in the seaside town in as many days to do so.

The Heavitree pub, on the corner of High Street and Chapel Hill in Exmouth, has become a mainstay in the town, having been open for over a decade under various managers and even different names.

But now, the pub’s latest owner has announced “with a heavy heart” that he has been left with no choice but to shut the doors of the Heavitree for good, less than a year after taking on the mantle.

Keegan Walker took to The Heavitree’s social media pages last night Friday, January 3) to share the news, writing: “It’s with a heavy heart that I announce the Heavitree will be closing with immediate effect.

“The challenges of running a pub in today’s climate, with rising costs and pressures, have unfortunately become too much, despite all the effort and passion that’s been put in.”

He went on to thank his “amazing” team, including those who helped to put on entertainment at the pub, continuing: “When I took over, I was determined to bring something fresh and exciting to Exmouth. We introduced new concepts, hosted incredible live music, and created a space where memories were made.

“A huge thank you to Will Wallace, Barclay and Airhead for the entertainment, and to Ricky, Scott, and Callie for always keeping our doors safe. And of course, my incredible team – you’ve been amazing.”

And Keegan concluded that this setback was not going to stop him from pursuing future projects, adding: “This isn’t the end. Bigger things are coming.

“I’m already working on something new, something even more exciting, and I’ll be back soon, ready to take things to the next level. So keep your eyes peeled, because the best is yet to come. Thank you for all your support. This isn’t goodbye, it’s just ‘see you later’.”

The news was met with sadness and sympathy on social media, as one person commented: “I’m so sorry Keegs, I know you put your heart and soul into this. I do know you will continue to succeed in whatever venture you embark on – you are amazing!”

And another wrote: “Another one bites the dust. So sad, Exmouth has nothing to offer anymore.”

Indeed, the news comes just days after another Exmouth restaurant and bar owner announced he was also closing his business, Spoken In The Strand, which he has run for the past 14 years. You can read all about that here.
