Plant these three flowers in January for a ‘colourful’ spring garden display

Flowers are an ideal way to add a splash of colour and life to your garden, no matter the season. The first signs of spring are often the green shoots of bulbs emerging from the soil in February.

The gardening experts at Hedges Direct have recommended planting three flower bulbs in January to ensure your garden is looking its best for spring. They suggest planting several bulbs in January, but it will depend on your garden’s condition.

Planting tulips, crocuses, and daffodils in January is acceptable as long as the ground isn’t too hard.

1. Crocus

Crocuses bring a vibrant splash of colour to the garden in both spring and autumn. The small purple, yellow and white flowering corms create a delightful display, reports the Express.

Typically planted in late autumn, these can be planted in early January provided the bulbs are firm and show no signs of mould. Crocus bulbs planted in January are likely to put on their “best display” in their second year.

2. Tulips

When planted in January, tulips can produce a “colourful display of stunning blooms” in late spring during their first year. Tulip bulbs require a period of chilling to break their dormancy, making now an excellent time to plant them.

The best time to plant tulip bulbs is when the temperature has dropped as this reduces the risk of tulip fire, a fungal disease that thrives in warm, damp conditions.

Gardening expert Monty Don conveyed on his blog that it’s not too late for green-fingered enthusiasts to plant their tulips in January. He remarked: “Tulips planted now might flower a little later than those planted in November but they will make a perfectly good display.”

He further advised those seeking a “good show” of tulips this year, to embed the bulbs an inch or two into the topsoil.

3. Daffodils

As for daffodils, similar to tulips, if they are planted during January, they should successfully establish their roots by spring and bloom subsequently, with planting them in winter acting as a safeguard; it allows the soil to freeze quickly after planting, effectively shielding the bulbs from squirrels on the prowl for a snack.
