Met Office extends yellow weather warning for snow and ice in Devon

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice is in effect for Devon this evening with a chance of some disruption to transport. The Met Office has included northern parts of the county in its warning that brings with it the likelihood of heavy rain and a chance of snowfall.

Originally ending at 23.59pm on Saturday, the warning is now in place for the whole of Sunday, ending at 23.59pm tomorrow.

The Met Office says: “Outbreaks of rain spreading progressively northeastwards later on Saturday and overnight into Sunday will likely be preceded by a spell of snow on its northern flank. Whilst there is some uncertainty, any snow in southern and eastern parts of England, especially at low levels, will probably be rather transient before turning back to rain.”

Parts of Mid and East Devon are included in the yellow warning which runs until midnight tomorrow. Forecasters say it is all down to a weather front pushing north from the south. Gloucestershire and northern parts of the country are set to bear the brunt of the harsh conditions.

The Met Office adds: “Some significant accumulations of snow are possible across parts of Wales, the Midlands and northern England in particular, at least for a time, where 5 cm or more could accumulate fairly widely, with perhaps as much as 20-30 cm over high ground of mid and north Wales and potentially 30-40 cm over parts of the Pennines. This, accompanied by strengthening winds, may lead to drifting of lying snow.”

A yellow warning means it is likely the weather will cause some low level impacts which could potentially disrupt plans. The warning sets out what people can expect:

  • There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected
  • There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off
  • A small chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • There is a chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel
