A teenage thug serving time for a violent attack stabbed another inmate.
Mason Ireland, 19, set upon his fellow prisoner in the exercise yard of HMP Wetherby with a makeshift knife on January 20 this year. Leeds Crown Court heard on Monday that the weapon was made out of plastic and had a cloth handle.
Prosecutor Ellie Guildford said: “That day at around 4pm while in the exercise yard the defendant approached the inmate and had a conversation. Seconds later, prison officers and CCTV caught the defendant stabbing him with an improvised knife made out of sharp plastic with a cloth handle.
“He could be seen holding his [the victim’s] jacket to stop him escaping. He aimed for his face and head until staff intervened.”
The court was told Ireland was serving a five-year sentence, after being convicted of causing grievous bodily harm at Liverpool Crown Court. He was just 15 when he carried out that attack.
Mitigating, Oliver Norman, told the court he is a “young individual” who is just 19-years-old.
His Honour Judge Phillips KC jailed Ireland for 20 months for affray and unauthorised possession of a knife or offensive weapon. He said the current matters took place just 17 months into Ireland’s sentence. He said: “This was clearly a vicious and persistent attack…You made repeated and forceful stabbing motions against him. It is clear that you were determined to inflict pain and injury and held onto him so he couldn’t back off.”
