Households to notice special DWP bonus payment in bank accounts next week

Certain households across the UK may notice a boost to their bank balances next week as a special payment arrives from the DWP. This will be a bonus payment people will not have been expecting and it’s because of the cold weather we’re currently experiencing.

Eligible households should be ready to check their bank accounts for a £25 boost over the next week or so. These will be Cold Weather Payments issued by the Government.

The emergency payments are only given out during bitterly cold spells of weather. They are triggered when average temperatures are 0C over a seven-day period in a particular area.

Eligible households include those on Pension Credit, Universal Credit and Income Support as well as certain other benefits. It appears likely Cold Weather Payments will be triggered in some areas of the UK with conditions to remain bitterly cold into next week.

On some days, daytime temperatures will struggle to climb above 1C or 2C. Not everyone may get the money, however, as temperatures are recorded at a local level at weather stations.

The Government says: “You may get Cold Weather Payments if you’re getting certain benefits or Support for Mortgage Interest. If you’re eligible, you’ll get these payments automatically. You do not need to apply, but you may need to tell Jobcentre Plus if you have a baby or if a child under five comes to live with you.

“The payments do not affect your other benefits. You’ll get a payment if the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees celsius or below over seven consecutive days. You’ll get £25 for each seven-day period of very cold weather between November 1, 2024 and March 31, 2025.”
