Parts of the United Kingdom were blanketed by snow in the early hours of Sunday and many sporting fixtures will fall victim to the weather.
The snow has impacted travel across the country, with Leeds Bradford, Manchester, Liverpool John Lennon and Birmingham Airports all closing their runways. The UK’s roads and train network has also been affected, with a severe weather warning issued by the Met Office after 25cm of snow fell in some areas.
It is a nightmare situation for those hoping to attend sporting events, or play in grassroots fixtures. Travelling fans face potential late postponements, with pitch inspections taking place this morning before a decision is taken by officials.
The biggest fixture of the day undoubtedly comes at Anfield, where Liverpool are hoping to host Manchester United in a Premier League blockbuster. However, the match is currently up in the air, with Liverpool City Council’s Safety Advisory Group set to hold a meeting at 12pm to determine whether or not the game can go ahead.

Liverpool said in a statement: “A safety meeting was held this morning to assess the weather and travel conditions for today’s fixture against Manchester United at Anfield.
“At this stage the match is planned to go ahead as normal and every effort is being made to get the game on. A further safety meeting will take place again at midday to assess the latest conditions. We will update supporters just as soon as we can. Please take extra care out there, Reds.”
Liverpool was coated by snow overnight and, even if the pitch is playable, icy roads could force a postponement on safety grounds, with thousands of fans travelling from Manchester for the match.

Elsewhere in the country, there have already been postponements, with Chesterfield’s match against Gillingham in League Two the most high-profile to be called off so far. Chesterfield cited “adverse weather conditions, adding: “the match referee conducted an early inspection and decided the game could not go ahead as planned”.
Fleetwood’s game against AFC Wimbledon has also been called off in League Two due to the condition of the pitch and safety concerns in the surrounding areas.
Horse racing at Chepstow is also under threat on Sunday after the course failed the first inspection of the day at 7.30am. Another check is due later this morning to determine whether racing can go ahead.
Racing scheduled for Naas, in the Republic of Ireland, and at Plumpton, on the south coast near Brighton, have been unaffected.
Huddersfield Town Women vs Norton Ladies and AFC Fylde Women vs Middlesbrough Women have both fallen victim to the weather.
