London covered in blanket of snow overnight in pictures

Londoners have flocked to social media to show their footage of snowfall in the capital last night (January 4). The city was under a yellow weather warning for snow and ice by the Met Office and the weather followed through on their predictions.

Sleety snow fell after a short shower across the city, which at first made a wet mess on the streets, but in many places, after a while, the snow managed to settle overnight. Flurries began around 9.30pm and continued to become heavy snow by 11,50pm, Time and Date weather data shows.

Thousands recorded the snow-dusted streets with glee and shared their footage online for the world to see.

The original poster wrote in a comment: “Was magical here for two or three hours, but turned to rain now. Fortunately the kids were so excited we headed out the door when it started and they had snowball fights while I took photos with my DSLR and did my best to avoid any direct hits

“That’s the thing about London snow. You really have to grab it when the chance presents itself, as is liable to turn to sodden rain at any moment.”

People took to X, formerly Twitter, to post about the snow too. Jordan Lee reported there was snow falling heavily in East Finchley, North London too.

The video shows the residential street lined with Victorian-terraced buildings coated with snow. A tree’s outline is highlighted in brilliant white while clumps of the white stuff slump down car windscreens and buries slushy tyre tracks carved into the road.

Another photo on X shows a perfect un touched blanket of snow in a residential street in London. Its poster Derek Pollard captioned the post: “Crazy snow in London”

Will it snow again soon?

With all the excitement online over just three hours of snowfall, some people might wonder if London could be in for another round soon. Unfortunately the Met Office doesn’t think so, with no prediction of snow for London for the next week, and today (Sunday, January 5) has been unusually warm with highs of 12C right after the cold weather last night.

However, WXCharts believes there is a chance of snowfall on Monday, December 6. Their weather map shows that parts of North and South London could be on the edge of a larger area of snowfall flowing across the midlands and could potentially hit the city around 6pm. The Met Office predict the temperature to be between 7C and 2C on Monday and WXCharts predict similarly.
