Meghan Markle’s return to Instagram ‘makes sense’ as royal experts question reasons behind it

Meghan Markle’s return to Instagram has been branded as ‘making sense’ amid commentators expressing it was ‘strange’ she ever left. The Duchess of Sussex made a splash with her first individual social media post in nearly seven years this New Year’s Day, though she opted to disable comments on her post.

Royal experts Jennifer Newton and Ann Gripper from the Daily Mirror discussed this development on the Pod Save The Queen podcast. Royal features writer Jennifer remarked: “It kind of does make sense because at the minute they (Meghan Markle and Prince Harry) don’t have anywhere to promote their work.”

She added, “I know they have their website but you would have to be physically logging on to the website every single day to see if it had been updated.”

She also questioned the kind of content Meghan might share: “This obviously comes into people’s feeds. Is it going to be a place where she puts on: ‘I’ve been to this charity or I’ve visited this place.’ Or is it going to be what she did before where it was snippets of her life. Is she going to show her at home with Harry and the kids?”

The duchess’s much-awaited initial post under her new @meghan handle went live on January 1, presenting an Instagram reel captured by Harry featuring Meghan jogging on the beach and inscribing 2025 in the sand.

Reports suggest the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, created a new Instagram account in June 2022, with detectives of the internet stumbling upon an account dubbed @meghan later in the summer, showcasing a profile photo of pink peonies.

Given Meghan and Prince Harry’s outspoken criticism of social media platforms, Daily Mirror’s executive editor Ann Gripper finds it quite perplexing that the couple initially withdrew from Instagram, asserting on a podcast: “I think we’ve talked about in the past about how strange it is for people who do want to control their own narrative that they didn’t have that direct link,” reports the Express.

She expounded on the importance of controlling one’s own story, saying: “However much they have their own particular media friends who will put out a more Meghan and Harry friendly view of the world, or certainly a less critical one, it will always then be filtered and it is not them and their true selves.”

Meghan has been lauded for her astute move to disable comments upon rejoining Instagram. The duchess announced her reappearance on the platform by releasing a trailer for her upcoming eight-part Netflix series, ‘With Love, Meghan’, set to premiere on January 15.

Online safety specialist Ryan T. Williams told Express.co.uk how he views Meghan’s decision to turn off comments as a masterstroke.

He connected this action to her efforts with Harry and their Archewell foundation concerning child safety online, acknowledging, “Meghan’s decision to disable comments is genius. It ties into the work she’s doing alongside Harry and Archewell about keeping children safe online; she’s practising what she preaches.

“Prioritising her mental health and keeping her space positive is her prerogative. Why should she open herself up to trolls with nothing better to do than send her abuse?”
