A mum has revealed an unusual but effective de-cluttering tip to help tidy up your home and get rid of unnecessary items.
Our homes can quickly become filled with unused products, toys, gifts, clothes, and more. Many people hold onto these items, storing them away ‘just in case’ they’re needed in the future, which makes it difficult to have a proper clear out and create space for new essentials or desired items.
Post-Christmas, the need for organisation is even more evident as we try to find room for all the thoughtful presents we may have received.
Organisation and decluttering expert Casey Jones has shared a straightforward yet ingenious method to help people organise their homes. On her popular Instagram page, she states her mission: “Teaching busy mums to live intentionally, minimally, simply and clutter free to make room for more of what matters”, and it’s resonating with many.
The influencer has garnered nearly 300k followers on the popular photo and video sharing app, with her audience eager for her advice.
She recently introduced her followers to the “poo rule”, a concept that has both entertained and impressed social media users. In the recent video, Casey is seen sitting on the floor, sorting through various items.
Text displayed over the video reads: “Decluttering became so much easier when I learned about the poop rule”. In her caption for the hit video, Casey wrote: “Have you heard of the [poo] rule? ” “When decluttering, ask yourself – if this item was covered in poop, would I replace it? If the answer is no, you likely don’t see value that item anymore and it’s safe to declutter.”
The comment section was filled with people keen to share their thoughts.
One user quipped: “I would throw away literally everything lol”. Another commented: “Lol this is so perfect and takes all the guesswork out of it hahahaha” and another reflected: “I asked myself if I throw all this away can I afford to replace it.”
Someone else tagged a friend, remarking: “a great way to think about it”, while another person, engaging with the method in real time, posted: “I’m currently sitting exactly like that lol decluttering my stationery/books/paper cupboard at home.”
Different interpretations of the rule came up, as one person questioned: “Oh I thought the poop rule was: if this was covered in poop would you wash it off to keep it or throw it away? If you wouldn’t bother washing it, get rid of it.”
To which Casey responded: “You can ask either of those questions for sure! Both work great!”
