A yellow warning for ice has been issued by the Met Office for Merseyside. The warning comes after a series of weather warnings that have been issued in January as the cold snap continues.
Today, the region woke up to a blanket of snow and ice as the city was placed under a yellow weather warning for snow and ice. This came after a rare amber warning was in place for much of the weekend after heavy snowfall and icy conditions.
The new weather warning for ice is in place from 5pm tonight until 12pm tomorrow afternoon, January 8. The Met Office say: “Afternoon and evening showers will slowly ease back to coasts Irish Sea coasts, allowing ice to form on untreated surfaces inland. Showers will be a wintry mix, with 1-2cm accumulating on ground above about 200 m before they begin to ease.”
Icy patches are expected to form on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths. The Met Office have warned of some injuries from slips and falls on slippery surfaces.
Recommending ways to stay safe when it is icy, The Met Office suggest leaving the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush, reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls. If you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery. Similarly, if cycling, try and stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated.
The weather body say: “Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.” When a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.
This evening and tonight, minimum temperatures of -4 °C are forecast for North West England. The forecast states: “turning drier with clear spells as showers slowly fade and the winds ease overnight. Becoming cold under the clear skies with a severe frost forming, and some icy stretches possible.”
