Despite having seriously busy schedules, packed with family obligations and work commitments, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and Prince Harry regularly make sure that they fit a family adventure or two into their calendars.
Indeed, in December 2023, the family jetted off on a lavish tropical getaway, with their two children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet in tow.
As reported in People magazine, the Sussex family spent a week in Costa Rica before the festive period, travelling there on 14 December and leaving on 20 December. Local media reported that the couple and their two youngsters stayed in a holiday home rather than a hotel, and were snapped by a fan who spotted them travelling on a golf cart during their stay.
The family is reported to have visited Zapotal, in the Guanacaste province of the Central American country, where they enjoyed a tropical family getaway amid breathtaking scenery, showing their youngsters what was likely to have been an unforgettable family holiday.
Their trip to Costa Rica isn’t the only family holiday that the Sussexes have been reported to enjoy over the last couple of years. Earlier in 2023, Harry and Meghan were said to have visited Portugal after attending the Invictus Games in Germany, and more recently the couple have been reported to have bought a home there, their first European home since being evicted from their UK property Frogmore Cottage.

In Autumn 2023, they were also reported to have spent some quality time in the Caribbean and last year saw the couple take two major trips – dubbed by some commentators as “unofficial royal tours”. The Duke and Duchess first travelled to Nigeria, where they marked 10 years of the Invictus Games, and then in August, the couple visited Colombia where they learned about how to make the internet safer for children and young people.
Trips like these filled with public-facing engagements would have once been part and parcel of their royal work, with the royal tours the couple went on always being well received during their tenure as working royals – but travel in general has played an important part of their romance since they first met.
When they first started dating, Meghan lived in Canada where she was filming Suits, and the couple maintained a long-distance romance. One of their first ‘dates’ together was actually a trip to Botswana – Harry’s home away from home. In his memoir Spare, Harry described how impressed he was that Meghan was willing to rough it in a “very Spartan” tent, despite her Hollywood background, and it was during this trip that the Duke realised she was “perfect” for him.
Meanwhile, Meghan is currently poised to drop her hotly anticipated new show for Netflix, so the Sussex family may be due another well-deserved break soon. With Love, Meghan will see the Duchess return to her lifestyle roots, with famous pals “old and new” helping teach the audience the best “tips and tricks” to help take the day-to-day to the next level. From cooking to gardening, the trailer for the show featured celebrity pals like actress and producer Mindy Kaling and experts like food activist and restauranteur Alice Waters taking part in Meghan’s next chapter.
The series is part of the couple’s multi-year deal with streaming giant Netflix, with whom the pair have already produced four shows: their record-breaking self-titled documentary series that followed their love story from its earliest days to their new lives in California, Live to Lead, Heart of Invictus, and Polo.
For a long time before Meghan met Harry, while starring in the hit legal drama Suits, she ran a lifestyle blog called The Tig. She shut down the website when her relationship with Harry got more serious, but nevertheless wracked up a lot of die-hard fans, many of whom are seriously excited for Meghan’s new show which has a similar vibe.
