New pictures show how Halifax town centre will be transformed

These pictures show how Halifax town centre will be transformed under plans to revolutionise the town’s travel systems.

The A629 Phase 2 Halifax town centre project, a bold regeneration initiative fully funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund, is being spearheaded by Calderdale Council.

The new images depict how the project will establish new public spaces and facilitate safe and efficient travel, including the addition of new cycle paths. They reveal a new link west of Halifax to the town centre at Bull Green, the revitalisation of Cow Green into a welcoming gateway from the west, and an inviting route from Halifax Rail Station to the town centre for Square Chapel, the Central Library, The Piece Hall, and Calderdale Industrial Museum.

The visuals also highlight new areas for pedestrians and secure routes for cycling and walking on Broad Street, a connection from the north of the town to Market Street, a revamped layout and safe routes around the Victoria Theatre, improved connections to the town centre from the south and west, and the pedestrianisation of Market Street.

The initial stage of the ongoing A629 Phase 2 Halifax town centre project has seen substantial progress, including works at Bull Green, Northgate, Broad Street, and Skircoat Road. These improvements feature new pedestrian facilities, cycle lanes, efficient road layouts, and upgraded traffic signals to ensure smooth traffic flow during peak times.

One prominent early change was the removal of the Bull Green roundabout, paving the way for a revamped junction.

Efforts have also commenced to enhance the route for individuals journeying from Halifax Bus Station and the northern parts of town to the town centre.

Galliford Try is overseeing the construction, with their representatives stationed at Halifax Borough Market, situated between Urban Burrito and Toffee Smiths, every Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am-1pm to provide answers to queries about the project.

Furthermore, as works advance at Bull Green, Calderdale Council has launched a complimentary shuttle bus that operates around the town’s western areas to facilitate access.

Councillor Sarah Courtney (Labour, Calder), Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport at Calderdale Council, expressed enthusiasm about envisioning the future developments, stating: “Millions of pounds of investment as part of the A629 Phase 2 Halifax town centre project is completely transforming travel in and around Halifax town centre.

“Landscaping will improve the look and feel of key spaces, while upgrades to junctions will make travel more efficient and support improved public transport connectivity and cycle infrastructure.”
