'I saw dead people as a kid, then I found out I was a witch'

Sundays might be for rests and roasts but for Emma Griffin, the real life Molly Weasley a la Harry Potter, they included seances and “playing with dead people”. That’s because she is a self-acclaimed witch.

The mum-of-two from Falmouth has even cast her spell on 262 would-be magic makers from across the world – by initiating them all as witches in one massive free Zoom session.

The 48-year-old remembers how growing up, her mum Pat and dad Pip would often hold a seance, exposing Emma and her brother Ben to otherworldly beings.

Inheriting magical powers from her mum, Emma “came out of the closet – the broom closet” after her parents died from cancer respectively in 2019 and 2020, and is now a full-time witch – charging £100 for a “one-to-one guidance medicine reading .”

She says: “I’m the real life Molly Weasley – everyone calls me that!” But, unlike the Harry Potter witch, she is a thoroughly modern Molly, with around 96,000 followers on Instagram and 40,000 on TikTok.

While she has faced hostility from people saying she will “go to hell for working for the devil,” Emma says being a witch is “positive and natural.”

She says: “It seemed normal for me to see – and play with – dead people from the age of just four. My first time was at Hampton Court, but ever since then, it’s happened very, very regularly.

“My younger brother Ben and I knew our parents were different, but then, aren’t everyone’s?

But Emma, didn’t discover her mum was a witch until she was 17, when she rushed home in tears after visiting a psychic fair with her now husband Steve, when they were art students.

A tarot reader had told her that she and Steve, also 17 and now a graphic designer, would never have children. Determined to help, her mum confessed she was actually a sorceress and would teach Emma the skills to prove the reader wrong. And in 1999, she and Steve had their daughter Holly, followed by their son, Harry, three years later.

Soon after, moving from the London area to Cornwall, to be closer to nature, alongside jobs ranging from fashion designer to illustrator, interior designer and photographer, Emma gave her clients spiritual guidance.

Going public about her magical talents when her parents died, she became a full-time witch – going on to initiate Holly, a nursery manager, as a sea witch in 2021 – making her the third generation of witches in her family.

“When I tell people I’m a witch, the majority are fascinated and love hearing about what I do, the transformative stories I can tell, from helping people find their own happiness, to healing them, even helping them conceive like I did 25 years ago,” says Emma.

Recalling her mass witch initiation zoom session, which included women from as far away as Finland and Australia, she says: “Over that hour, I guided them through the ceremony, helping them all become witches, telling them to spread the word far and wide.

Emma says her family are on board, with not only daughter Holly being a part-time witch, but her husband also in full support.

“Unlike Mum, I’ve been completely open with our kids from day one about me being a witch,” says Emma.. “I think that, through a process of osmosis, they were fascinated and also attracted to the spirituality of it,.”

Emma’s website has now attracted clients from all over the world wanting help with everything from mental health to fertility.

Since starting a website, she says: “I’ve been swamped with enquiries. What most people don’t realise is that almost all of us perform witchcraft. I intend to keep spreading the word. Those muggles (people without magical talents) are really missing out!”

“I’ve recently published a book on all things witchy – ‘The Witch’s Way Home’ – with a chapter on how to initiate yourself.”
