Father Brown’s Claudie Blakley star found herself ‘in bed with a dead body’

Father Brown is set to grace our TV screens once again with its twelfth series launching on Friday 10 January. The beloved BBC series returns for another thrilling season, with Mark Williams reprising his role as Father Brown once again.

He’s joined by returning cast members including Tom Chambers as Chief Inspector Sullivan, Claudie Blakley as Mrs Devine, Ruby-May Martinwood portraying Brenda, and John Burton as Sergeant Goodfellow. Following the cliffhanger of Mrs Devine and Chief Inspector Sullivan’s engagement in the season 11 finale, the new series promises to centre around their journey down the aisle.

The synopsis says: “Following the exciting proposal at the end of series 11, the sleepy village of Kembleford is abuzz with good news as Mrs Devine and Chief Inspector Sullivan look forward to their upcoming wedding. But when a surprise visit from the father of the groom quickly throws preparations into turmoil, will they even make it to the church?”

Claudie Blakley has shared insights into the latest series of Father Brown. She spoke about her character’s adventures and what viewers can anticipate from Mrs Devine in the new episodes, reports the Mirror.

“I get accused of murdering somebody in one episode, which was brilliant to film, even though I spent a lot of the episode crying! It was pretty frightening because in those days that would be it for Mrs Devine, she could be hanged if found guilty. So the stakes are high for Sullivan in that episode and it was really emotional,” she divulged.

Claudie shared a memorable incident from the set of Father Brown, where she ended up “in bed with a dead body” during the first week of filming. Detailing the bizarre experience, she said: “The first week of filming I found myself in bed with a dead body and had no idea how he got there! That was pretty funny. I also had to do a couple of fun little stunts.”

In the 12th series, Mrs Devine and Sullivan’s wedding is at the forefront, but things appear to veer off course. Mrs Devine receives a stunning ultimatum from her future father-in-law prior to the ceremony, while Lady Felicia gets a bit too involved in her duties as the wedding planner.

Claudie revealed some juicy bits about the upcoming nuptials: “We’ve taken three series to get here, but here we are finally! Lady Felicia is helping out with the wedding planning but she gets carried away with the flowers and hair and Mrs Devine lets her take over a bit, so the day is at risk of not turning out how Mrs Devine wanted her day to be.”

Continuing the saga, Claudie explained the tension rising before the big day: “Sullivan’s father also says that he won’t give the wedding his blessing unless they both move to London, which shocks Mrs Devine. She’s scared at the prospect of having to leave Kembleford and her friends, but she considers it for Edgar and for his career; she loves him.”

Father Brown beings airing on BBC One on Friday 10 January at 2pm.
