Several schools have closed due to “unsafe” ice following snowfall earlier this week. The region woke up to a blanket of snow and ice on Tuesday, January 7 as the city was placed under a yellow weather warning for snow and ice.

This came after a rare amber warning was in place for much of the weekend after heavy snowfall and icy conditions. The adverse weather conditions caused disruption to travel, including on the road’s, to train services and flights.

A new weather warning for ice was then put in place from 5pm on Tuesday and is set to remain until 12pm today, Wednesday, January 8. Met Office Chief Forecaster, Jason Kelly, said: “With cold weather persisting across the UK this week we have a number of severe weather warnings for wintry hazards.

“Snow showers will continue to fall over Scotland, Northern Ireland and into Northern Wales and northern England too. Where surface water and snow freeze overnight there is a risk of ice as temperatures widely dip below freezing. There will however be good spells of sunshine for those away from northern coasts, though it’ll still feel cold in the northerly breeze.”

The ice has caused several schools to close due to the icy conditions causing school grounds and the surrounding areas to be “unsafe” for staff and pupils. Below is a list of schools closed that the ECHO are aware of. If you’re child’s school is not included in the list, email us at olivia.williams@reachplc.com.
