In response to the recent cold snap, households in certain parts of England will receive a one-off £25 payment to assist with energy costs. The UK has seen temperatures drop below zero since the beginning of the new year, with heavy snowfall in some areas.
Households claiming specific benefits receive additional funds during periods of cold weather to help cover heating bills. The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) operates its Cold Weather Payment scheme annually from November to March.
When the temperature falls below 0C for seven consecutive days, eligible households in the affected postcode areas will receive a one-off £25 payment. To qualify, households must be claiming a benefit such as Pension Credit, Income Support or Universal Credit.
The first Cold Weather Payments of the year have now been triggered following a drop in temperatures in the north of England. These payments are activated if temperatures are either recorded or forecasted to be 0C or below for an entire week.
According to the DWP, 18 postcode areas in England are due payments for the period January 2 to January 9. The first cold snap of the season in mid-November previously triggered Cold Weather Payments, reports the Manchester Evening News.
To find out if your postcode is eligible for a payment, you can utilise the DWP’s postcode checker on the gov.uk website. Additionally, you can browse our comprehensive list of all the postcode areas due a payment for January below.
Areas set to receive a payment include certain parts of Cumbria and Northumberland. Scottish postcodes are not included in the Cold Weather Payment scheme, however, some regions of the Scottish Borders that are technically in England despite having a Scottish postcode are eligible for payments.
As the cold snap persists, more Cold Weather Payments are anticipated in the upcoming days. The chilliest nights of the year are forecasted this week, with temperatures potentially dropping to minus 14C on Wednesday night and minus 16C on Thursday night in northern regions, as per the Met Office.
