Police ticketed an electric car driver after causing an obstruction on a footpath. Officers were on patrol in the city centre on the evening of Tuesday, January 7 when they spotted an MG car parked on the pedestrian footpath.

The officers then spotted the car was being charged through the railings. Pictures shared by the Liverpool Police Facebook account showed the car parked right up to the railings on the footpath and the charging lead connected to the vehicle.

Police said they issued the driver a “traffic offence report” for causing the obstruction. This driver was not the only person to receive a ticket that night, as police said they dealt with more than 40 vehicles causing obstruction to the footway and highway across Liverpool city centre.

In a statement they said: “The owner of this vehicle has not been the brightest spark this evening. Shockingly they have caused an obstruction of the pedestrian footpath in order to charge their electric vehicle.

“Officers have used their road traffic powers and issued the vehicle with a traffic offence report. Officers have dealt with over 40 vehicles this evening for causing obstruction to the footway and highway across Liverpool city centre.”

Following the post on Facebook, many people shared their opinion on the matter with mixed opinions. One person who commented on the post said: “Yet again the police are willing to do something in the city centre, but ask them to do the same in outlying areas and your told there is nothing they can do.

“As for chargers take a look at Woolhope Road, they put chargers in the lamp posts on the opposite side of the road to where people park. So they have to park on the pavement. We need a city wide plan not just the centre.”

Another person added: “Pavements are for pedestrians – no exceptions.” A third person commented: “Problem is, the owner of this car has had to do this, because the cable to charge his car from his house, isn’t long enough.

“This will become more common place, as more motorists are forced into electric vehicles. No off street parking, so what are they supposed to do? Perhaps the Government could provide an explanation.”

Other people said these issues will become more commonplace as more people use electric cars, while others said parking “like this” will become more “rife”.
