Coronation Street triple exit confirmed as ITV star says ‘it’s the nature of soaps’

Three Coronation Street stars have confirmed they will be leaving the ITV soap in 2025.

Sharon Marshall discussed the news that Sue Cleaver, Colson Smith and Charlotte Jordan are leaving the long-running serial drama during Wednesday’s (January 8) episode of This Morning with hosts Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley.

Making her return to the ITV daytime show for the first time in 2025, Sharon shared a soap recap with viewers watching at home, filling them in in what happened in Weatherfield, Walford and Emmerdale over the festive period.

Kicking off the Corrie, Sharon said: “I was gutted. I’ve known for a while but Sue Cleaver is leaving. Unfortunately, they don’t allow you to lock people in the set. It’s kind of illegal.

“She’s been there for 25 years and wants to try new things. She will be leaving with the door very much still open.

“Sadly, we’re also going to be losing Craig Tinker [played by Colson Smith]. He didn’t solve much crime but he was such a lovely lad and the lovely Daisy Midgeley [Charlotte Jordan] as well. It’s the nature of soaps, lots of people leave as new people and new faces come in.”

The revelation of Sue’s departure from the show was met with sadness from fans, sparking debate over how her character Eileen Grimshaw’s journey on the cobbled streets will end.

Discussions have spread across social media, including on a Coronation Street fan page on Facebook, where reactions to Sues end on the Street were diverse. One viewer commented on Eileen’s recent lack of central storylines: “She’s more just of a background character now, Eileen’s not had a storyline in years. Still gutted though.”

Another fan speculated about her potential exit plot: “I think she will split up with George and go live with Jason in Thailand.” Agreeing with the speculation, a second fan remarked: “I’ve been thinking for a while that they will split up.” While a third said: “Same but I hope George doesn’t leave as well!”

Viewers of the hit soap are aware that Eileen is currently romancing George Shuttleworth, portrayed by Tony Maudsley. Meanwhile, her son Jason, played by Ryan Thomas, hasn’t graced the cobbles since 2016 when he departed Weatherfield after 16 years to start afresh abroad.

Coronation Street is on ITV at 8pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday and available to stream from 7am on ITVX
