Tube passengers have been noticing a “wild” update to mobile coverage on the London Underground. A new portion of one unexpected line has now been connected to the Underground’s phone service network.
Work is currently being undertaken by Transport for London (TfL) to improve the mobile phone coverage on the Tube network. London Underground lines are at various stages of having this installed.
The Elizabeth line now has service from all of its stations. These are all covered by 4G, with tunnel sections now covered by 5G. And now a new portion of the Northern line has mobile phone coverage. This is from Clapham Common to Clapham South and the tunnel section between Clapham Common and Balham.
However, other online reports suggest there may be coverage from as far as Stockwell. One person posted to X:”Phone signal on the Northern Line is wild.” While another said: “There’s phone signal on the Northern line huhhh?”
TfL’s Connected London programme will see all four mobile network operators (Three Mobile, EE, Vodafone and Virgin Media-O2) bring high-speed 4G and 5G mobile connectivity across the Tube. The technology will also host an Emergency Service Network which will give first responders access to life-saving data, images and information in emergencies. Low-powered cellular radio units are also being installed to help enhance mobile coverage and capacity.
